The Nematic-Smectic Transition in Suspensions of Slightly Flexible Hard Rods

چکیده

A second virial theory is presented to study the influence of a slight flexibility on the nematic-smectic A transition in fluids of freely rotating hard rods. The spinodal is loc~ted by performing a bifurcation analysis of the equation describing the single-particle distribution function. A closed expression for the structure factor is also derived. The structure factor diverges at the spinodal, confirming the results of the bifurcation analysis. The theory shows that flexibility I) shifts the critical concentration to higher values and it) decreases the smectic layer spacing. It is concluded that flexibility destabilizes the smectic state, and that sufficiently

Smectic Phase in a Colloidal Suspension of Semiflexible Virus Particles

Aqueous suspensions of micron-length, charged, semiflexible fd virus particles are studied experimentally in order to explore properties of the cholesteric-smectic phase transition in a system approximating flexible, hard rods. Through comparison of this system with (1) computer simulations of hard, rigid rods, (2) experiments on tobacco mosaic virus, a rigid, charged virus, and on pf1, a flexi...

From soft to hard rod behavior in liquid crystalline suspensions of sterically stabilized colloidal filamentous particles.

The liquid crystalline phase behavior of a colloidal system of sterically stabilized rods is reported. Our colloidal suspensions consist of highly monodisperse, semi-flexible filamentous viruses which have been coated with neutral hydrophilic polymers by irreversibly binding poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to the surface of the virus particles. Depending on the size of the grafted polymer, up to th...

Effect of Chain Flexibility on Nematic–Smectic Transition

The theory of nematic–smectic phase transition in the system of uniform semi–flexible chains with hard–core repulsion is presented. Both the general density–functional formalism the tube–model calculation show that the flexibility of the chains results in a strong first–order transition, in contrast to the common weak–cristallization scenario of the nematic–smectic transition in rigid rods. The...

Hard rods in a cylindrical pore: the nematic-to-smectic phase transition.

The effect of cylindrical confinement on the phase behaviour of a system of parallel hard rods is studied using Onsager's second-virial theory. The hard rods are represented as hard cylinders of diameter D and length L, while the cylindrical pore is infinite with diameter W. The interaction between the wall and the rods is hard repulsive, and it is assumed that molecules are parallel to the sur...

Surface and smectic layering transitions in binary mixtures of parallel hard rods.

The surface phase behavior of binary mixtures of colloidal hard rods in contact with a solid substrate (hard wall) is studied, with special emphasis on the region of the phase diagram that includes the smectic A phase. The colloidal rods are modeled as hard cylinders of the same diameter and different lengths, in the approximation of perfect alignment. A fundamental-measure density functional i...
